Getting out of your comfort zone has to be the hardest task. I'm pretty happy with my drawings, but having learned everything all by myself, auto-didactically, I'd never been able to shake off the feeling of something that I left unachieved.
That's why I'm attending a nude drawing course at the moment - and, dear God, it's on one hand frustrating as fuck and liberating like drug on the other. I've got a wonderful tutor and he manages to critique AND cheer me up in one take of breath:
'Dear, your composition is pretty lousy, you better take more time in laying out the first lines, before you define them clearly. And you're a perfectionist, aren't you. You fall in love with small things like this ankle here and the crook of the neck there in order to forget the rest of the drawing. That's why you fuck up four of five drawings.
But. Not once in your life have you been afraid of the white sheet of paper, haven't you?'
This made me smile.
'Nope, not once.'
